Space: The First Protest

Share now:

Space is often called the final frontier for humanity, but today it was the first protest for humans. The organization ASAN, Autonomous Space Agency Network, printed out a huge sign resembling a tweet that said, “LOOK AT THAT, YOU SON OF A BITCH” and directed the quote towards Donald Trump.

The tweet is from a quote said by a former astronaut, Edgar D. Mitchell. Upon seeing the Earth for the first time, Mitchell said:

“You develop an instant global consciousness, a people orientation, an intense dissatisfaction with the state of the world, and a compulsion to do something about it. From out there on the moon, international politics look so petty. You want to grab a politician by the scruff of the neck and drag him a quarter of a million miles out and say, “Look at that, you son of a bitch.”

Obviously, Trump isn’t someone who has developed a global consciousness. A consciousness that recognizes the human species as one single family. A consciousness that sees Earth as one organism. A consciousness that realizes we are all astronauts on Spaceship Earth. Trump’s only developed far enough to count money, which isn’t that far. I believe in the American education system, we learn to count before Kindergarten.

Carl Sagan, one of the most famous astronomers and science communicators of all time, once said:

“A new consciousness is developing which sees the Earth as a single organism and recognizes that an organism at war with itself is doomed”

Carl Sagan, developing a new consciousness.

The Autonomous Space Agency Network, which is NASA spelled backwards, is a world-wide network of independent, community-based space exploration programs. They seek to overturn the corporate and military monopoly on space exploration by funding and executing missions that bridge the gap between scientific enterprise and artistic expression. ASAN made a video of humanity’s first protest in space:

I just recently joined the Board of Directors for the organization “Global Network Against Weapons and Nuclear Power in Space” and I’m so happy to work such a dedicated and passionate group. We focus our efforts on stopping the militarization of space. Many people are unaware of what the U.S. military is doing in space. Like everything else, they want to dominate it. The Pentagon wants to send nuclear weapons, lasers, and expand satellite technology to spy on every single human being, all from space. So its up to organizations like the Global Network to help educate people across this globe and the spark an international citizens movement to stop this militarization of space. So let’s all do what the Global Network keeps reminding us to do, Keep Space For Peace.
